City Hall: Coeur d'Alene Wants More of Your Money - Parking, Parks, Moorage and Even the Cemetery Single-sourced
- Coeur d'Alene's General Services Committee on Monday began reviewing a slate of fee increases. Parking changes alone could bring in up to $100,000 more a year. The full council votes Nov. 3. Single-sourced (CdA Press).
- The annual McEuen and Memorial Field parking pass would go from $10.50 to $20 for city residents and from $21 to $30 for county residents. Secured monthly parking in the Coeur d'Alene Avenue structure would rise from $60 to $100. Overnight moorage at the Third Street docks would go from $50 to $75, with a $100 violation for nonpayment, and a $10 "courtesy fee" would be added to parking notices.
- Also proposed: a new non-resident cemetery fee, after what staff called a "surge in non-local residents purchasing lots and niches since 2020," high-impact film permits doubling from $300 to $600 a day, and a $110 permit for goat weed abatement. Events cost the city more than $43,000 in overtime. Renata McLeod called the list "fees that we felt are defendable and appropriate."
- Source: CdA Press, Oct 27
- Why it matters: Locals paying double to park at their own lakefront is what a tourist economy does to the people who live in it. The cemetery line says it plainly: outsiders are buying up even the ground we're buried in, and the answer from City Hall is another fee schedule instead of a question about who this town is for.
Eminent Domain: Shoshone County Moves on Landowners Over Two Bridges - "Property That Doesn't Belong to You" Single-sourced
- Shoshone County commissioners approved impasse letters to landowners holding up replacement of the Terror Gulch Bridge, the only access to more than 100 homes, and the Two-Mile Bridge, both funded through the Leading Idaho program. Condemnation through eminent domain is now possible. Single-sourced (CdA Press).
- Scott Wood of the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council called the owners "nonresponsive, combative, asking a lot." He said a redesign cut the land needed from about 1,200 square feet to 88, and warned, "I have the money now... it would go to other projects."
- Landowner Bryan Williford says he was offered $1,800. "I'm a single father of three... I'm sorry that you made plans with property that doesn't belong to you," he said. He says he was told he couldn't attend the meeting. Forrest and Alice Van Dorn are the other owners named.
- Source: CdA Press, Oct 27
- Why it matters: A hundred families need that bridge, and a family's land is not a line item. Both are true. When the government plans on a man's property first and asks him second, then threatens to take it, it has the order backwards. Eminent domain should be the last word, not the deadline.
Land: Sled Hill Is Saved for Good - Neighbors Bought It Back From the Developers Single-sourced
- Kaniksu Land Trust bought the 48-acre Sled Hill property in Dover for $1.9 million in 2022, after donors stepped in to buy it and lease it to the trust for $1 while money was raised. Schweitzer donated 50 historic lift chairs for auction, and the goal was met by August 2023. Single-sourced (Bonner County Daily Bee).
- The community held a grand opening celebration Saturday.
- Source: Bonner County Daily Bee, Oct 27
- Why it matters: Nobody waited for Boise or Washington. Local people pooled their money, kept a piece of the commons in local hands and kept the subdivision off it. That is what local control looks like when it actually works.
Power Lines: Avista's New Line Along Lake Coeur d'Alene - You Have Until Nov. 17 to Speak Up Single-sourced
- Avista wants to build a 115-kilovolt transmission line near Carlin Bay on the east side of Lake Coeur d'Alene. The utility says feeders from its Blue Creek and O'Gara substations are at capacity and have had outages. Single-sourced (CdA Press).
- The Idaho Public Utilities Commission extended the public comment deadline from Oct. 27 to Nov. 17. The case number is AVU-E-26-10.
- Source: CdA Press, Oct 26
- Why it matters: The east side of the lake needs reliable power, and the people who live there get to say where the poles go. A regulated monopoly answers to the PUC, and the PUC answers to comments. Use the three weeks.
Legislature: The Pledge Fight Hits Sandpoint - Citizens Alliance Fires Back at Sen. Woodward Single-sourced
- In a Daily Bee op-ed, the executive director of the Hayden-based Citizens Alliance of Idaho rebuts an earlier op-ed by Sen. Jim Woodward and others that called the group an outside influence. The writer says 43 of Idaho's 105 legislators have signed the group's pledge. Single-sourced (Citizens Alliance op-ed).
- Per the op-ed, Sen. Scott Herndon, Jane Sauter and Cornel Rasor signed. Woodward, whom the writer calls "soon-to-be former," and Mark Sauter declined.
- Source: Bonner County Daily Bee, Oct 25
- Why it matters: A group based in Hayden is not "outside" North Idaho. The real fight is whether voters get to know in writing what a candidate stands for, and the people who refuse to sign are telling you something too.

Prop 1: Pro-Life Groups Sue Over Cut-Rate TV Ads - The Secretary of State Says Nobody Filed a Complaint Confirmed
- Idaho Family Policy Center and the Too Extreme for Idaho campaign sued Monday in Canyon County to stop TV ads. They allege Idahoans United for Women and Families paid the Idaho Democratic Party to run Prop 1 ads presented as being for gubernatorial candidate Terri Pickens, so they would air at cheaper candidate rates. These are allegations. No court has ruled. Confirmed (Idaho Capital Sun, Spokesman-Review).
- IFPC's Blaine Conzatti: "Pro-abortion activists cheated their way into cheaper television advertisements." Idaho Democratic Party spokesperson Avery Roberts called the suit "frivolous."
- Secretary of State spokesperson Joe Parris said the office is not investigating and "has not received a complaint on the ad that is at the center of this lawsuit."
- Source: Idaho Capital Sun, Oct 26 · Spokesman-Review, Oct 26
- Why it matters: Follow the money. If the abortion campaign is running its ads through a party and a candidate, voters deserve to know who is really paying, and a court is the place to find out a week before the vote.
Prop 1: Hollywood Comes to Boise - Chrissy Teigen Headlines a Rally for the Abortion Amendment Single-sourced
- Chrissy Teigen will speak at a Prop 1 rally Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at Treefort Music Hall, 722 W. Broad St., Boise, and hold a private meeting with Idaho mothers. The campaign notes she lived in Idaho Falls as a teenager. Single-sourced (Idaho Capital Sun).
- Source: Idaho Capital Sun, Oct 26
- Why it matters: When a campaign flies in a California celebrity to tell Idaho mothers what to think, it has stopped pretending this is a homegrown movement. Idaho's Constitution should be written by Idahoans.
Money in Politics: $254,000 in PAC Money Floods Three Seats - Realtors, the Speaker and the Governor's Crowd Single-sourced
- From Sept. 1 to Oct. 26, 11 PACs reported $254,647 supporting legislative candidates and four PACs reported $30,068 opposing them. About 70% went to three Republicans: Desi Burbank in District 15 ($75,548), Rep. Dustin Manwaring in District 29 ($54,461) and Rep. Mike Pohanka in District 26 ($49,950). Single-sourced (Idaho EdNews, from Sunshine filings).
- The Idaho Realtors PAC put in $52,634. Speaker Mike Moyle's Idaho Rising PAC put in $44,696. IACI's Idaho Prosperity Fund put in $32,960. The Idaho Liberty PAC, which EdNews describes as associated with Gov. Brad Little, put $25,000 behind Burbank. Rep. Jordan Redman of Coeur d'Alene funds the 36-18-1 PAC, which spent $15,625.
- On the other side, Planned Parenthood Votes Idaho PAC reported $5,150 for Democrat Mary Shea against Manwaring.
- Source: Idaho EdNews, Oct 26
- Why it matters: This is the establishment's map of the races it's afraid to lose: realtors, the chamber of commerce, the Speaker and the governor's PAC all writing checks to the same three people. Ask who those legislators will answer to in January.
Schools: The Teachers Union Endorses Critchfield - And Still Can't Bring Itself to Back Little Single-sourced
- The Idaho Education Association's PACE endorsed Superintendent Debbie Critchfield for re-election but made no endorsement for governor. The IEA earlier issued a "vote of no confidence" in Little after he signed a bill barring taxpayer resources from being used for unions. Single-sourced (Idaho EdNews).
- The union also endorsed Democrat Todd Achilles against Sen. Jim Risch and Kaylee Peterson against Rep. Russ Fulcher, among 48 candidates. Critchfield faces Democrat Becky Sundin Mitchell and Constitution Party candidate Teresa Roundy.
- Source: Idaho EdNews, Oct 26
- Why it matters: When the teachers union picks your Republican superintendent, believe them about whose side she is on. Little gets neither the union's love nor conservatives' trust, which is about what four years of trying to please both earns you.
Big Tech: Labrador Goes After a Bankrupt Chatbot Company - Kids' Private Chats Are on the Auction Block Confirmed
- Attorney General Raúl Labrador joined a multistate filing in the bankruptcy of Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, demanding protections for children's and consumers' data in any sale of its assets. Confirmed (Idaho AG release, states' court filing).
- Idaho opened its investigation after a 2024 wrongful death lawsuit alleging the company's chatbots fostered an exploitative relationship with a child and reinforced his suicidal thoughts. The states say the company holds private conversations about users' mental health and relationships. Labrador: "Corporate bankruptcy can't undo the damage that Character.AI did to children in Idaho."
- Labrador also sued OpenAI on Oct. 14 under the Idaho Consumer Protection Act over ChatGPT's safety claims to parents.
- Source: Idaho AG, Oct 26 · Idaho AG, Oct 14
- Why it matters: A company that harvested children's secrets shouldn't get to sell them to the highest bidder on the way out the door. Big Tech treats a child's inner life as inventory, and the state is right to stand between the two.

Israel Votes: Netanyahu Reportedly Pushed for an Iran Strike Before the Election - His Own General Said No Confirmed
- The New York Times, citing three senior Israeli defense officials and three others briefed on it, reports Netanyahu spent weeks trying to arrange a new airstrike on Iran before Tuesday's election. IDF chief Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir found no urgent military need and, with Air Force commander Maj. Gen. Omer Tischler, raised the political timing. Netanyahu then pressed for a separate action short of an overt strike. Confirmed as reported (NYT; carried by Telegraph and Guardian; Israel's Channel 12 reported a clash first).
- Netanyahu's office and Defense Minister Israel Katz called the reports "fake news." No strike took place.
- Israelis vote today, with Netanyahu against former IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot.
- Source: New York Times, Oct 26 · AP, Oct 26 · Telegraph, Oct 27
- Why it matters: Even Israel's own generals didn't want a war timed to an election. America already got dragged into one Iran war. The question for Washington is why we keep tying our foreign policy to the political survival of one foreign prime minister.
Immigration: An Illegal Alien Beheads a Marine on the Iwo Jima Memorial - Then a Judge Grants Bond Confirmed
- Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, of Stafford, Va., was arrested Oct. 21 after Prince William County police say they caught him striking the Iwo Jima replica near Marine Corps Base Quantico with a sledgehammer. One Marine figure's head was removed. Police estimate damage in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. He is charged, not convicted. Confirmed (Washington Post, WJLA, DHS, ICE).
- DHS says he entered illegally in 1999 and got DACA in 2014. It has lapsed, and ICE says renewal was denied Oct. 23. Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia have also filed two federal felony counts.
- Chief Judge Petula Metzler granted $2,500 bond Monday, but he remains jailed. ICE has lodged detainers, and he is to go to federal custody when released. A detective testified he claimed a well-known rapper encouraged him online, and that he had applied to join the Marines and been turned down.
- Source: Washington Post, Oct 27 · WJLA, Oct 26 · Prince William Times, Oct 26
- Why it matters: DACA was sold as amnesty for model kids who knew no other home. Twenty-six years in, the system still couldn't decide whether this man belonged here. A nation that can't settle who its people are will eventually watch its own monuments come down. Note that much of X says he was released; the record says he's still in jail.
Immigration: A Pro-ICE Christian Blogger Gets Picked Up by ICE - The Right Splits Over Samuel Sey Confirmed
- Samuel Sey, 39, a Ghanaian-born, Canadian-raised conservative Christian writer who co-hosts "The Narrative" podcast for Ohio's Center for Christian Virtue, was arrested by ICE at Columbus airport Oct. 21 and is held at the Butler County Jail. Confirmed (Columbus Dispatch, Signal Ohio, Christian Post).
- DHS says he entered legally in 2022, overstayed by more than four years, has no pending applications and accepted voluntary departure. His wife says he has been working with a lawyer, and a GiveSendGo started by Joel Berry has raised more than $24,000.
- Sey has written that America changing its laws in ways that end his residency would be "inconvenient – not unjust," and posted "If you love America you should support ICE."
- Source: Signal Ohio, Oct 26 · Christian Post, Oct 26 · Columbus Dispatch, Oct 26
- Why it matters: He said it himself: enforcing the law isn't unjust just because it lands on you. The interesting fight is on the right, where some of the same influencers who cheer deportations want an exception for one of their own. A nation's law can't have a VIP line.
Elections: Feds Say 405 Noncitizens Voted in Washington - No Charges and No State Records Yet Confirmed
- Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd of Western Washington says Homeland Security investigators identified 405 noncitizens who registered and voted, about 1,500 past votes between them. He asked Secretary of State Steve Hobbs to set aside their ballots. "This is only the tip of the iceberg," Floyd said. Confirmed (KING 5, KOMO, AP). The underlying claims are unproven.
- No one has been charged, and DOJ has released no official records; the state has refused to hand over its voter records. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Pete Serrano of Eastern Washington joined the announcement. Many on the list are green card holders, per KING 5, which called it "more insinuation than proof."
- Hobbs's office says DOJ's system flags citizens and that one record dates to 1994.
- Source: KING 5, Oct 26 · KOMO, Oct 26 · WA Secretary of State
- Why it matters: Our neighbor mails a ballot to everyone and then refuses to let anyone check the rolls. Floyd owes the public names and charges, not press conferences. But a state that won't verify citizenship is asking to be doubted.
Censorship: Two Ex-FBI Officials in Court Over the Hunter Biden Laptop - Did They Lie About Burying It? Confirmed
- Former FBI officials Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides are due back in federal court in Washington today for a preliminary hearing. Each is charged with one count of making false statements to Congress in 2023. They deny it and call the case politically motivated. Confirmed (AP, Newsweek).
- Floris led the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force from 2019 to 2022. Prosecutors allege, among other things, that Benavides falsely said he learned of the laptop from Wikipedia. Both were charged Oct. 23 by criminal complaint, not grand jury indictment, and appear before Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui.
- Source: AP, Oct 26 · Newsweek, Oct 27
- Why it matters: The "foreign influence" task force is the outfit that helped shape what Americans could see before the 2020 election. Whatever the court decides on these two, the public still deserves the full story of how the laptop got labeled a Russian plot.

TOP 3 PICKS FOR WEDNESDAY'S BACKLASH (Oct 28, 3 PM PT) #
- A war timed to a vote: The NYT says Netanyahu pushed for an Iran strike before today's election and his own military chief refused. Results should be in by showtime. Whose interests drive these wars, and why America keeps getting tied to one man's career.
- DACA and the Iwo Jima memorial: An illegal alien with lapsed DACA beheads a Marine at Quantico, gets bond, and stays jailed on an ICE hold. Pair it with Samuel Sey, the pro-ICE blogger now facing deportation, and the right's fight over whether the law has exceptions.
- Prop 1 money, one week out: IFPC sues over cut-rate ads run through the Democrats, Chrissy Teigen flies in Wednesday, and the realtors, the Speaker and the governor's PAC pour $250,000 into three seats. Who is buying Idaho's election.
Bench: Coeur d'Alene's fee hikes and the non-resident cemetery fee. Shoshone County's eminent domain threat. Sled Hill. The Avista line comment period. Citizens Alliance vs Woodward. The IEA's Critchfield endorsement. Labrador and Character.AI. Washington's 405 noncitizens. The FBI laptop hearing.
